Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)

Correlated color temperature (CCT) tells about the hue and tone of light from any specific Light Source or fixture. CCT is measured in Kelvin (K). Different temperatures on the Kelvin scale represent different colors (As shown in picture).

For example, light at 2000K-3500K looks more orange/yellow and is called warm white color. As Temperature increases in Kelvin scale, color changes to more of a natural or neutral white (between 3500K and 5100K) and finally into a bluish-white known as moon/cool white (5100K-20000K).

Color Rendering Index (CRI)

Color is pristine a property of light that can be seen by the naked eye. It  is of great importance to notice that even the most brightly colored object when placed in a dark room displays no color at all. Therefore, light is the most important aspect that decides if a color can be seen or not.

The simple definition of CRI would be the ability of a light source to precisely display all the possible frequencies of a certain spectrum as compared to the natural light (Sun). It is ideally rated on a scale ranging from 1-100. Natural sunlight has the highest CRI of 100, while artificial source of light (for example LED) can range anything from 75 – 97. Note the change in colors of Apple for changing the color rendering property of light.

Beam Angles

The beam angle indicates the spread of light from the light source. Narrow beams provide centralized lighting and are suitable for accent lighting. Wide beams give a more general and softer light.

Narrow beam angles make the light more intensive and intense. A wider beam angle better distributes light to more areas of the room making it more soft and even. Knowing how to use beam angles correctly can significantly improve the lighting effects in a room.

Color Consistency (MacAdam Ellipse/SDCM)

LED Binning is a practice carried out to ensure high quality and color consistency in the performance of LED light output and colour. Hundreds of LED chips are used in single application. Color consistency holds very high importance for creating desired effects in spaces.

SDCM is acronym for ‘Standard Deviation Color Matching (Values 1 – 8, 1-3 being Good Quality, 4-5 Average Quality, 6-8 Poor Quality)’. SDCM has same meaning as MacAdam Ellipse. LED Binning is the process of grouping LED’s together to maintain a tighter control of the possible output color variations. High Binning rated LED’s are invaluable process to specifiers and end-use customers.
